Steven Spielberg To Direct Feature Film Adaption Of Roald Dahl’s “The BFG”

Los Angeles, CA (April 25, 2014) – DreamWorks Studios announced today that Steven Spielberg will direct the adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved classic children’s novel, “The BFG.” Published in 1982, “The BFG” tells the story of a little girl who leads a friendly giant and the Queen of England on a mission to stop the fiercer, man-eating giants from gobbling children.

DreamWorks acquired the rights to the book in 2010 after Kathleen Kennedy brought it to the company. Melissa Mathison, who last teamed with Spielberg and Kennedy on “E.T.”, has written the screenplay. Frank Marshall will produce with Michael Siegel and John Madden, who are on board as Executive Producers. Madden was originally slated to direct “The BFG” but relinquished his directing duties in order to focus on his next film, the sequel to the international smash hit, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.”

Spielberg will begin production on “The BFG” in the first quarter of 2015 with a projected release date in the second quarter of 2016.

“The BFG” has enchanted families and their children for more than three decades. We are honored that the Roald Dahl estate has entrusted us with this classic story,” said Steven Spielberg. “I am pleased to be reunited with Melissa Mathison and Frank Marshall. Together with executive producers Michael Segal and John Madden and everyone at DreamWorks, we are thrilled to be able to bring Roald Dahl’s beloved story to the big screen.’

Reliance Entertainment, Ajay Devgan Films & Rohit Shetty Productions to co produce Singham 2

“Ata Maajhi Satakli Aahe”… unquestionably, one of the most iconic dialogues in a film that fired the imagination of the masses. Singham was produced by Reliance Entertainment, starred Ajay Devgan and was directed by Rohit Shetty. The film garnered huge success at the box office and was one of the highest grossing films of 2011. The film stands tall in the coveted Rs 100 crore club.

Now, after the super success of Singham in 2011, Reliance Entertainment, Ajay Devgan Films and Rohit Shetty Productions, will come together to co-produce its sequel, Singham 2. This blockbuster in the making will be helmed by its original director Rohit Shetty.

Commenting on the association, Sanjeev Lamba, CEO Reliance Entertainment said, “Singham is a very important franchise for Reliance Entertainment. Singham exceeded all expectations and was a critical and commercial hit. We are delighted to take the franchise forward and co-produce Singham 2 with Ajay Devgan Films and Rohit Shetty Productions and have both Ajay and Rohit on board to take the story forward. The film goes on floors early next year and I am sure this also will be a treat for all Singham, Ajay Devgan and Rohit Shetty fans.”

Singham earned positive feedback from both the critics and the masses. Singham 2 will once again have Ajay Devgan flexing his muscles as the pulverizing power-house cop-Bajirao Singham. Commenting on the occasion Ajay says “The cult status and fan frenzy of Singham had reached such tremendous levels that we were happily compelled to make a second offering post its success. As soon as the right script was in our hands we went ahead.”

Fresh off the success of the all-time highest grossing block-buster Chennai Express director Rohit Shetty is super-excited to take things to the next level.

Rohit Shetty, “Singham is a household brand loved by everyone. It took me almost 2 years to develop the final draft of the 2nd part as we had to be precise as to what level we have to take Singham. We did not want to get carried away with the success of the first part and at the same time we don’t want to take our audiences for granted as they have given us so much love and respect.”

Singham 2 is scheduled to go on floors early next year and will release globally mid 2014.

An emotional launch for Singham 2 at the police function in Mumbai

The highlight of the police function in Mumbai last night was the launch of Rohit Shetty’s Singham 2, a film that brings together Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Just before the trio launched the sequel, a promo (made by Rohit) specially shot for the occasion played.

Cops spoke about their sense of pride when Singham (2011) released. The short film showed many policemen and lady constables fighting back tears as they recounted how their families started respecting their jobs much more after watching the film. Slightly embarrassed at some of their team-members’ emotional outbursts, senior officers seen in the film cleared the lump in their throats and spoke of how it felt good to wear khaki.

Says Kareena, “I’m looking forward to starting work on the film, which goes on floors in the first week of March. We will hit screens on August 15 (Independence Day) this year.

Like our police force, Singham 2 is an emotional journey for me too, as it means I will join Rohit and Ajay with whom I did two of the Golmaal films. Not to forget, Singham is a franchise that one is privileged to be associated with. The earlier film had its heart in the right place and that’s why it went on to become a calendar event for India.”

He tries to protect Mei from the Triads while outwitting New York officials and the Russian Mafia. He won’t stop until she’s safe.
